A presentation of the encyclopedic album “Marius Petipa. La Dansomanie” in two volumes

On the occasion of the opening of the exhibition the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music also presented an encyclopedic album ‘Marius Petipa. La Dansomanie’ in two volumes and three languages – Russian, French and English. The pages of the first volume present Petipa’s own original ballets and feature materials from the Administration, workshops abd technical  department of the Imperia Theatres that today form the collection of the St Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music and the St Petersburg State Theatrical Library. There are costumes and set designs, playbills, actual stage costumes and pictures of productions taken in the photographic studio of the Imperial Theatres. Each production has a brief summary of its libretto and information on the premiere with the names of their creators.

The second volume tells about the destiny of Petipa’s creations on the world ballet scene in the 20th and 21st centuries. Among the vast legacy of the Master only about 15 ballets have survived the test of time. Today these masterpieces form the basis of the classical ballet repertory of all prominent theatres of the world. The second volume of the edition contains more than 200 illustrations: photographs, designs and original costumes of outstanding exponents of ballet worldwide in the 20th and 21st centuries.
